3 Things to Consider Before Planning a Destination Wedding

Wedding planning can feel overwhelming, but it is also a time to celebrate and have fun. One of the best parts is finding ways to blend the bride’s and groom’s personalities into the big day.

Many couples show their personalities by choosing a destination wedding. They might want adventure, a new setting, or a more personal celebration. It is easy to get caught up in the dream of a vacation-style wedding and overlook some challenges.

Destination weddings can be beautiful and memorable. Before you decide if this is right for you, there are some practical things to think about.

1. Exclusion

Your guest list will probably get much smaller if you choose a destination wedding.

This usually happens because some people cannot or do not want to travel. Older guests, like grandparents, might not be able to make the trip. Some venues also have limited space. There may also be guests who would love to come but cannot afford the travel costs.

You might want a smaller guest list for a more intimate wedding. Still, it is important to consider who might be left out and how that could affect your families.

2. Finances

Destination weddings can get expensive fast. You have to pay for the wedding itself, plus travel and lodging.

Money does not just get tight for the bride and groom. It can also get tight for the guests. You may also have limited vendor options, with fewer opportunities to shop around for cost savings. Depending on the location, you may need to work with vendors you have never met in person, which can add another layer of planning.

If you are planning a destination wedding, be sure to allow enough time to prepare. You may need to consider a longer engagement to give people enough time to plan, save, request time off, and make travel arrangements.

3. Pressure on Guests

Yes, the wedding day is all about the couple, but do not forget that it is also about two families coming together.

Some people want to be part of your big day, but with a destination wedding, you are putting a price tag on that decision. There may be pressure for guests to spend more than they can afford. You are essentially asking guests to take personal vacation time for your wedding, pay for travel, and more than likely, also give you a gift.

Make sure you are considerate of those you are inviting. A destination wedding can be wonderful, but it helps to communicate clearly, plan early, and give your guests as much information as possible.

If you remember these three things while planning a destination wedding, you will be better prepared. Enjoy your perfect day without regrets, and happy travels!
